Leica Monochrome

Leica's newest M camera with a black and white only sensor. It's estimated to be approximately $7500-$8000 when it ships in August. I scoffed until I saw the quality of an image taken at 10,000 ISO with incredibly low noise. The dynamic range on it must be insane, just look at how the images turned out.

Sidenote: I would've loved to have seen those same images taken at a lower ISO, maybe 640, to see how much light was actually available.

Pixel-fitting

Fascinating article from Dustin Curtis about antialiasing. I really love when the truly adept can break down concepts like this for everyone to understand.

Does “Mastered for iTunes” matter?

A question I've asked myself while perusing the iTunes store. The answer might shock you.

Disruption

Disruption

All of the news and product releases at NAB last week were exciting to be sure, but the unveiling of Blackmagic's Cinema Camera is the one bit of news that has my full attention and Canon and Nikon would do well to key a very close eye on it.

CryEngine 3 demo

Very soon it's going to be difficult to tell where the pixels went. Expect a lot of excellent looking games coming down the pipeline in the coming months.

Blackmagic Cinema Camera

Now this is what I'm talking about: 2.5K RAW shooting resolution for just under $3000. Looks like a Super16-ish sensor size, 13 stops dynamic range, recording right to SSD, SDI out, and more. Also: first camera to have an on-board Thunderbolt port? I think so...

New Final Cut Pro X Features

Larry Jordan:

Apple began providing “advanced looks” as part of the roll-out to the launch of FCP X and wanted to continue letting us know what’s coming.

This is the new Apple, using trusted sources to help diseminate information about their flagship products. Similar in scope to their Mountain Lion announcement.

LitePanels MicroPro Review

LitePanels MicroPro Review

One of the worst situations to be in while on a video shoot is not having enough light. Your footage will either turn out noisy because of a high ISO or worse: underexposed. I recently took a Litepanels MicroPro out on shoot with me because I wasn't sure what kind of lighting conditions I'd be dealing with and boy am I glad I did.

Autodesk Reveals a Redesigned Smoke

I can't wait to see this. I tried Smoke a few months back and found both the interface and workflow to be completely alien to me. Here's hoping they cleaned it up and made it more usable.

Canon EOS-1D C DSLR

Canon should seriously hire someone to simplify these product names. Clearly EOS-1D is associated with the highest of high end camera gear, but this device has a totally different (pardon the pun) focus.

In short: 4K video capture in the DSLR form factor for $15,000. While I'm sure that the camera will produce stunning imagery given the current specs, I can't help but wonder who this product is geared towards? If you have the need to shoot 4K, you're clearly an industry professional/insane hobbyist with equally demanding needs for pristine audio capture (read: XLR inputs), something this form factor simply can't deliver. Further, while HDMI out is nice, at this price you really want something like HD-SDI for monitoring and external recording. The Motion JPEG Codec at 4K also probably looks great, but RAW output would be the best possible option so you can better correct problems in post.

I guess I'm not really sure why you'd invest $15,000 in the EOS-1D C (body only) with so much lacking when, for just $1000 more, you can get a RED Scarlet-X package with a Canon Lens mount that literally covers all of the aforementioned problems. Maybe my mind will change as they release more information.
